According to Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, Japan’s birth rate is currently ranked at 1.34 which is significantly below the necessary birth rate to maintain Japan’s population. It is believed that a 12-hour workday is partly to blame.

Keidanren, Japan’s largest business group, has pleaded with its 1,300 major international corporate members to start allowing their respective employees to go home early in an attempt to help Japanese families cope with its pressing social problems.

Canon, a member of Keidanren, has stepped up to the plate and will let their employees go home early twice a week in an effort to combat Japan’s shrinking population. Canon’s 5:30 p.m. “Lights-Out” program will also help to reduce overtime costs.
