Marijuana A Memory Aid?

Long known to impair memory, new research seems to show that ingredients in marijuana; THC and similar compounds, could prevent or reverse Alzheimer’s. “We were shocked and surprised that it worked,” says Gary Wenk, Ph.D., one of the study’s authors.

In the December 2009 issue of Neurobiology of Aging, research showed THC reducing inflammation and improving the memory of rats who were the equivalent age of 65 to 70 year old humans. The name of the compound is WIN-55,212-2.

Research shows young brains grow neurons differently than older brains. In a young brain, the neurons are grown and are connected. When they become too old, pruned. For the elderly with Alzheimer’s, it is argued swelling interrupts this process.
