Five Less Somali Pirates

After receiving the $3 million ransom, eight of the 25 pirates who boarded the oil tanker Sirius Star made off in a smaller boat. When they were caught in a storm, only three made it to shore, their share of the ransom, lost.

This information was confirmed by pirate Daud Nure and local resident Jamal Abdulle. Nure knew those involved even though he was not part of the illegal operation. Abdulle lives where the Star was anchored during the two month standoff.

The crude in the Star was valued at $100 million at the time of it’s capture. The capture demonstrated the pirate’s ability to capture targets of high value, even hundreds of miles from shore.
